Jay Z – Blueprint 3 (Album Review)

Jay Z - Blueprint 3

Jay-Z returns with album number 11 and the third installment of Blueprint. Almost 2 weeks before its scheduled 9/11 release date BP3 leaks all over the web. Jigga starts the record off with “What We Talkin’ About” featuring Luke Steele, the frontman for rock band The Sleepy Jackson. Jay spits “I don’t rap no more I run the map” over synth hits and a wailing sample. Nice track but those lyrics prove to be the truth as the album goes on.

While American Gangster gave fans a return of the lyrical Hov, this album lacks the witty lyricism of past Jay-Z records. “I’m from the Apple which means I’m a Mac/ she’s a PC she lives in my lap” are a few blank face metaphors from “Venus vs. Mars”. On the second single “Run This Town” big brother clearly gets sonned by his little brother Kanye.

On the upside, “Empire State of Mind” stands out as Jay takes a trip down memory lane back to BK with Alicia Keys holdin’ down the hook. “Already Home” with Kid Cudi is definitely a banger and “So Ambitious” featuring Pharrell is another highlight of BP3. Overall, Blueprint 3 is decent but Blueprint 1 remains the only classic out the trilogy.

3 out of 5 Joysticks
